Interventional Radiology

Interventional radiology (IR) is a medical subspecialty that uses medical imaging to guide minimally invasive procedures, offering a less invasive alternative to traditional surgery. These procedures diagnose and treat a wide range of conditions, often with faster recovery times and fewer complications.
IR procedures are performed through small incisions or punctures, often using imaging guidance (X-ray, CT, MRI, or ultrasound) to navigate instruments within the body. IR is used in various specialties, including cardiovascular, oncological, and gastrointestinal procedures.

Examples of IR procedures:

  • Angioplasty and Stenting: Opening blocked or narrowed blood vessels.
  • Embolization: Blocking blood flow to tumors or other areas.
  • Ablation: Destroying abnormal tissue (e.g., liver tumors).
  • Biopsies: Obtaining tissue samples for diagnosis.
  • Vascular Access: Placing catheters for medication delivery or dialysis.
  • Thrombolysis: Dissolving blood clots.
